About the Project

HUG was started by Master Gardener David Craig in 2004. To date, we have planted nearly 250 Habitat for Humanity landscapes.

As Master Gardeners, we are trained in all phases of home and vegetable gardening. We represent Knox County Extension service by promoting and teaching best practice methods as defined by the Extension Service and the University of Tennessee.

We help Habitat Homeowners design and implement their landscape or gardening plan. This includes soil biology, soil preparation, plan design, soil nutrition, plant physiology, water management, turf grass maintenance, growing vegetables, plant classification, and integrated plant management related to plant diseases, as well as weed science.

To do this we utilize one-on-one instruction, video, and internet research, as well as information from the Master Gardener Training Manual as resources. We always stress the importance of best practice and scientific research to aid and assist the development of knowledgeable garden Homeowners.

As a team, we enjoy the relationships formed and the interaction with the proud Homeowners, and hope you will join us in our endeavors as we work to benefit all persons involved as well as the community of Knox County.

If you would like to experience these concepts and processes including implementation and follow up of home landscaping and small plot gardening, and thereby strengthen the skills learned in the training program, please consider the HUG program.
