Hydrangeas that bloom on new wood can be, and should be, heavily pruned in late winter while dormant. Prune to increase airflow and sunlight into the middle of the shrub. It's easy to see the structure of the shrub when it has no leaves. Two Videos follow, one featuring Limelight and one feature Annabelle. Both are great examples of "new wood" hydrangeas.
