Crape myrtle bark scale is a serious new insect threat to southern crape myrtles. It threatens to turn what has historically been a beautiful, low-maintenance landscape tree into an unsightly, high-maintenance landscape tree. This nonnative scale was first detected in the US in Texas in 2004. It made it to Tennessee in 2019, and is spreading across the state. 2021 seems to be a "big year" for it in Knox County.
