Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) is the species most people think of when the word dogwood is mentioned. Minimal pruning is needed to keep flowering dogwoods healthy -- mostly the removal of the 4 D's (Dead, Diseased, Damaged, Dysfunctional). Unless you are cleaning up heavy storm damage or serious disease issues, most pruning can be done with hand pruners.
