About the Project
The Racheff Gardens and Arboretum is the state headquarters of the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs and was added as a Knox County Master Gardeners project in 2023. Located off Western Ave. near downtown Knoxville, Racheff is on the National Register of Historic Places. It has a 3.5 acre garden and a level 2 arboretum with more than 65 tree species, certified by the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council. KCMG project leaders Nancy Howell and Janie Bitner work with several master gardener volunteers, in addition to members of local garden clubs and a part-time Racheff gardener twice a month. Projects include invasive plant removal, reestablishment of a Hosta garden, planting, pruning, and adding trees. Racheff has several garden areas including a Japanese garden, children’s garden and a memorial wall; it is also a Blue Star Memorial site honoring the U. S. armed forces, an initiative of Tennessee garden clubs. Racheff Gardens is a designated Dogwood Arts Open Garden and may be rented for private events.
