Switchgrass is a perennial, warm-season ornamental grass that is native to most of North America, but especially east of the Rocky Mountains. It is a perennial, and in the home landscape, it should be divided about every three years. Pruning is quite straightforward. Cut at 2" above the ground (or as low as you can) in early spring before any sign of new growth.
