Hazelnut is a suckering, native deciduous shrub. It is fast growing and will send up many suckers from the root system. As a result, it can become a very dense thicket in just a few years.
It is important to prune Hazelnut during the first five years to establish the structure and framework. Regular pruning will maintain that structure and framework.
